"7 Steps To Online Marketing Success"
by Erik Kent, Co-Publisher, NJWedding.com

1. Define The Purpose Of Your Web Site

Do you want to sell your product or service directly? Provide company information? Solicit a response or feedback? Clearly knowing what you want to accomplish will help you focus your efforts on reaching your main objective.

2. Establish Basic Keywords & Phrases

How would you describe your business in its simplest terms? Who are your clients and what are they looking for? What phrases would they type in to search engines to find your type of service? Try it and see what comes up!

3. Write Web Site Content Based Around Keywords & Phrases

Once your keywords and phrases are defined, they must appear consistently (and be repeated 2-10 times) in the text of your web site so that search engines can pick them up to match them with what visitors are searching for

4. Add META Tags (i.e. Title, Description, Keywords, ALT, Comments, etc.)

Many search engines will include your link and describe your web site based on certain META tags on your pages, so it's important to be as descriptive as possible. Here's the basic format:

<HEAD>
<TITLE>Descriptive 5-8 Word Title For Your Web Page Goes Here</TITLE>
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="25-30 Word Description Goes Here">
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Up To 35 Keywords & Phrases Go Here (separated by commas)">
</HEAD>

5. Create Separate Pages For Different Topics On Your Web Site

Don't list everything you do on one pagerather, break up your web site into specific topics, and optimize each page based on that topic. Use keywords in different variations, in header tags, at the beginning of a paragraph, as close together as possible, in link text, in bold, italics or underlined and they will rank higher in search engines.

6. Submit Your Web Site To Major Search Engine & Directories

Here is a list of the popular search engines where you should consider submitting your web site:

Google (http://www.google.com) Overture (http://www.overture.com)
Yahoo! (http://www.yahoo.com) Ask Jeeves (http://www.askjeeves.com)
All The Web (http://www.alltheweb.com) AOL Search (http://search.aol.com)
Hot Bot (http://www.hotbot.com) Teoma (http://www.teoma.com)
AltaVista (http://www.altavista.com) Open Directory (http://dmoz.org)
LookSmart (http://www.looksmart.com) Lycos (http://www.lycos.com)
MSN Search (http://search.msn.com) Netscape Search (http://search.netscape.com)

7.Develop An Online Marketing Strategy (And Try Lots Of Different Things!)

Whether it's reciprocating links with other complementary web sites or paying to include your link on regional or industry-specific directories, you'll need to consider these options in your advertising budget in order to get traffic to your web site ("link popularity" is a major reason that your site is ranked high in search engines). You can also consider creating an email newsletter to a targeted group of potential clients to attract these visitors to your site (offer free information, contests, discounts). Try different subject lines and formats to see what works bestit's a constant process!
