Bridelawyer.com is Born!

Bridelawyer.com is Born!

One of our attorneys Morgan was newly engaged and found herself in a position similar to that of most brides: she was elated but confused, excited but frustrated, and at certain points even ready to throw in the towel on the wedding itself. Like many new brides she found herself faced with a lot of vendor contracts,  but unlike a lot of new brides, being a lawyer, she felt compelled to read and truly understand them. This is where most of the trouble set in!

Many of the contracts were very one-sided in favor of the vendor. Other contracts had provisions that were contrary to what the vendors’ representatives were telling her. Some vendors had lots of sparkly brochures, but ultimately the vendor’s contract failed to include the details in the brochures. Morgan fell in love with a photographer’s work but found that his contract really didn’t spell out exactly what she would get, and had conflicting provisions. When she approached him, he truly took offense and basically was asking her to put out a lot of money a year in advance simply based upon his word.

When a bride gets her heart set on a certain venue, gown, or wedding planner, what is she to do when she is presented with an agreement that is either unfair, contrary to what the vendor represented, or includes hidden costs or even conflicting ones? Most brides simply give in and sign on the dotted line, and they shouldn’t!

Morgan also found herself being constantly asked questions by her friends:

  • Do they need a prenuptial agreement?
  • Suppose they really wanted to make sure that under no circumstances was their wayward brother to get any of their money in case they died?
  • Once she was married,  if she fell into a coma, would her husband or parents get to decide what happened to her?

Seeing a real need out there for legal information for brides and experienced lawyers to deal with their problems, Morgan decided to form a practice area within the firm and Bridelawyers.com was born. Each day she became even more passionate about the project. There was a real need out there! She was a lawyer, yet she was confused and often felt she needed to consult with another lawyer over some particularly strangely written clause. How could brides who were not lawyers possibly protect themselves? She started to blow up with ideas! How about some general short reels or YouTube videos? How about a video course? There could be a book, maybe even an e-book!

For many years,  The Firm had been representing brides in one way or another, even representing photographers and wedding venues themselves. Yet today’s new world of social media, the Internet, and other factors, enable The Firm to make this legal knowledge more accessible for brides. There are plenty of websites that will help you plan your wedding, and give you helpful hints and tips for everything from really cute gifts for your bridesmaids to the top 10 honeymoon destinations. These are great and brides need them! Yet, those same brides are being asked to make decisions that affect their legal rights and it appears nobody is addressing them!

This is why we formed Bridelawyer.com!  We cannot give legal advice to any particular person about any particular circumstance, without that person retaining us for a particular legal matter, but we can help educate people to understand what some general basic legal rights are and let them know when they might consider hiring an attorney to review a matter, negotiate a term in a contract or even to draft a document.

Of course, we also represent brides in legal matters. If you have a specific legal matter in which you want to retain us, give us a call!
